debraWhat do you teach?

I teach first and second grade. This year I'm teaching second grade.

How long have you been at G&P?

I have been teaching at the Graham and Parks School for 20 years.

Where are you from?

I grew up in Watertown, MA. I now live in Natick.

How did you know you wanted to be a teacher?

I knew I wanted to be a teacher when I was around 15 years old. I always loved babysitting and spending time with my younger cousins. After I spent a semester volunteering in a first grade classroom, I knew that I would become a teacher. After that, I started to watch and learn from all of the educators in my life, like my mother, aunts and Sunday school teachers. Even to this day, I remember my first grade teacher, Mrs. Griffin, and how caring and encouraging she was. She made me love school! My goal each day, is to create an environment in my classroom where children feel encouraged and exciting about learning!

What is your favorite education quote?

My favorite education quote is “Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today” by Malcolm X. As educators we have the power to mold and shape the minds of our future leaders. All children need adults to tell them how smart they are and how working hard and persevering will lead to success in
their future.

What profession other than your own would you most like to attempt?
If I had the chance to try another profession, I would love to have a cooking show on The Food Network! I would feature recipes that you can make from random ingredients in your fridge and pantry. This is something that I love to do! It's a great way to repurpose leftovers and create something new and exciting!
