drawingArt students from CRLS came to JK 105 and K 103 to teach us about drawing people. They worked with small groups of students to show them drawing techniques and to help them draw pictures of themselves and their families. The high school mentors and younger students also had a chance to draw each other. The JK and K classrooms are using these new skills to work on their family portraits as part of the final project for their current expedition about families.

books for bingoFamilies from G&P and throughout Cambridge joined us on a cool evening in March for our first ever “Books for Bingo,” hosted by Title 1. This was an incredibly fun event and hopefully the beginning a great tradition at G&P. Principal Tony and Title 1 Coordinator Mary Grassi MC’ed the event, asking students questions about their favorite books. As students filled in their bingo cards, they were able to turn them in for a brand new book to take home! Pizza, snacks and information for parents were provided. Keep your eyes out for this event next year, and bring your Curious George knowledge, because the kids certainly will!

raptorsThe three 1st grade classrooms have started the Vertebrate Expedition. The launch for this unit was an exciting event that occurred when three birds of prey visited from the "Windows on Wildlife" program! First graders gazed in amazement as they saw a Barred Owl flap its huge wings. They gasped "how beautiful" when they saw the Kestral's brightly colored feathers and they "oohed" in surprise when they saw how tiny the Saw-whet Owl was. This presentation included a slide show that highlighted the life cycles of birds, went in depth about how raptors hunt for food and demonstrated the different sounds and calls of a variety of owls. Seeing such amazing birds was the perfect way to start an expedition that helps children appreciate the world of animals.
