We are the G&P Librarians and we are excited to share library news in each newsletter to families. We know that everyone has not had a chance to experience the reorganized/refreshed library space, but we hope you will sometime this year! One of our goals was to make finding books easier, by creating subject/topic bins for picture books and nonfiction, as well as more series bins for “big kid” fiction and graphic novels. It seems to be working well for students. We hope it will work for staff too!
Another summer project, which is ongoing, was the creation of a special collection of professional resources to support equitable, anti-racist teaching. The collection includes theory and practice books for adults, as well as biographies, nonfiction, and picture books to be shared with students. Its creation was generously supported by supplemental library funding from retired principal Claudie Jean-Baptiste. We’re still cataloging and adding books, but what we have ready now for teachers and students.
Lastly, just in time for
Native American Heritage Month, we received our order of
New Native Indigenous Books. While rearranging the library this summer, we put our hands on every single nonfiction book. We had to decide which were worthy of staying - were the information and images up to date? were they useful and/or appealing to students or teachers? Were they held together with tape? One area that needed updating: books about Native American/Indigenous people. We selected books published 2017-2022, most in 2021-22! This collection was purchased with the 4th grade curriculum in mind and it’s been a great addition to our library!
