trailblazersThe Office of Cambridge City Councilor E. Denise Simmons, in partnership with Community Conversations: Sister to Sister, YWCA Cambridge, the Cambridge Commission on the Status of Women, and Mass Humanities announced that G&P Kindergarten Teacher, Claudie Jean Baptiste and her sister, G&P SEI Family Liaison, Mildrid Gedeon have been selected as 2018 Trailblazing Women!

A trailblazer is an innovator, a pioneer, someone who blazes a path forward and guides others - we could not think of a better description for Claudie and Mildrid.

Their years of service on behalf of the Cambridge community at the Graham and Parks School have shaped countless student lives. Claudie, as a revered veteran kindergarten teacher, she is passing on her expertise as an active instructional leader. And Mildrid is a tireless liaison with families who do not speak English as a primary language at home, advocating for marginalized families and addressing their holistic needs. We are lucky to have you as part of Cambridge.

We held our first annual Trailblazing Women celebration in April 2017 in the chambers of Cambridge City Hall, and more than 100 neighbors came together to recognize our honorees and communally read Audre Lorde’s The Transformation of Silence into Language and Action. Last year, we paid tribute to mothers and daughters whose legacies of community citizenship and public service will be carried on. This year, our theme centers around groups of women who exemplify the battle cry, “Nevertheless, She Persisted” — women who persevere and are resilient in the face of tremendous odds — and our selected text is Maya Angelou’s In Her Own Words.

The Cambridge Trailblazing Women were honored at an evening reception at Cambridge City Hall on Wednesday, March 28th. Several G&P teachers, families and Tony were in attendance to see Claudie receive the award on behalf of herself and Mildrid. Congratulations, Mildrid and Claudie! We are so thankful for the work you do with students, families and staff every day.
