What do you do at G&P?
I teach grade 5.

How long have you been at G&P?

This is my second year.

Where are you from?

I’m originally from Montpelier, Vermont.

What is the greatest misconception about teachers?
Some people think that teachers work fewer hours than other people, because there is no school in the summer, and the school day ends at 2:30PM. Nothing could be further from the truth! We work evenings, weekends, and summers too. And we can’t ever really leave our work at work, because we carry our worries and love for our students with us everywhere we go.

How did you know you wanted to be a teacher?

I knew I wanted to be a teacher because I love helping people understand something new. I wanted to teach elementary school in particular because our days are full of so many different subjects! I love the mix of topics I get to explore every day.

What do you love about G&P?

Graham & Parks is an amazing school because families matter here. I think it’s impossible to teach a child well without getting to know where that child comes from, and at G&P we take the time to know each family well.

My students think I should be a Life Coach, I think I should be a professional sailor/beach goer!

Teaching motto or favorite education quote?

My favorite teaching motto is the power of yet and comes from Carol Dweck’s educational research “the power of the word yet" and how simply believing that you can improve impacts your ability to succeed.

Favorite teacher?

My favorite teacher was a general education teacher, Mrs. Leslie Brooks, that I met in 1997 when I was transferred and assigned to work at the Maynard School. I was her special educator that worked with her students both in and out of her classroom and saw daily how she could reach and teach any student. Mrs. Brooks was ahead of her time and intuitively knew what each student needed and implemented Behavioral, RTI, Special Education, ELL instructional practices.

What do you love about G&P?

I love working at G&P because of the cultural diversity of the community mirrors life, and teachers and students working side by side learn from each other.

If you could have any person (living, dead or fictional) as a principal, who would it be?

With all due respect to Tony, who I think is an amazing principal, I would be thrilled if Neil deGrasse Tyson was my principal. That man’s a genius.

Who was your favorite teacher?
Why?
My favorite teacher was Mr. Ertha, at Latin Academy. He taught me to love words, language and reading. He once said “I’ll teach you how to insult someone and be halfway down the block before anyone knows what you said.”
