dominiqueHow long have you been at G&P?
I have been at G&P for two months.

Where are you from?
I am originally from Hinche, Haiti; I moved to the United states in 1999. I currently live in Everett.

What exactly do you do as the School Nurse at G&P?
I ensure the health and safety of the multi-ethnic student population by providing high quality care clinical care for minor illnesses and injuries as well as provide referrals to doctors, and other specialists when appropriate. I also administer medications, organize and maintain files, and communicate medical information to school personnel and parents/guardians while maintaining confidentiality. I maintain emergency procedure information for students and staff, and support health promotion for students, staff parents and community.

Describe your favorite thing to do outside of school.
My favorite activity is to organize fundraising to help people in Haiti who are unable to provide basic needs for themselves or their family through (OSDPC) Organization of Support to the Development of Plateau Central. As the treasurer, I help organize galas, concerts, and raffles to raise money to help fund a new free vocational school in Plateau Central, Haiti. I’m also planning a mobile clinic in July. When I grew up in Haiti, it was hard. So I saw how it is to not have food or afford school. I go to Haiti every summer to help children. It breaks my heart to see them so hungry. I know that if I just help one person, I’m doing my part. I’m passionate about giving back and I make sure everyone around me does their part, even my husband and children!

How did you know you wanted to be a nurse?
From a very young age I knew I want to be a nurse. I love the positive impact nurses have on the lives of students and their families every day. I like showing people how to make themselves feel better. I love helping people, sitting with them, talking to them - it makes me feel good.

What do you love about G&P?
I love G&P because of we are understanding and respectful of all cultures, it’s so diverse and so welcoming. We have a strong sense of community. I love the backpack program, which helps G&P families have food on the weekends and the new G&P Free Food Market. When I started here in September, I knew this was a wonderful school. The way we support children from all around the world, that makes me happy.
