Third Grade Math

Our math curriculum fully reflects the new Common Core standards for mathematics. Students will continue to use the Investigations program, which has been supplemented with additional materials to bridge gaps between the former Massachusetts frameworks and the new Common Core frameworks.

The four “critical areas” in Grade 3 are as follows:

  1. Developing understanding of multiplication and division and strategies for multiplication and division within 100
  2. Developing understanding of fractions, especially unit fractions (fractions with numerator 1);
  3. Developing understanding of the structure of rectangular arrays and of area
  4. Describing and analyzing two-dimensional shapes.

By the end of Grade 3, students will:

  • Fluently multiply and divide within 100
  • Know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers (times tables 0-9)
  • Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using multiple strategies and algorithms
  • Multiply one-digit whole numbers by multiples of 10 in the range 10-90
