Critical areas of instruction in Grade 5 include
- Developing fluency with addition and subtraction of fractions, and
developing understanding of the multiplication of fractions and of
division of fractions in limited cases (unit fractions divided by whole
numbers and whole numbers divided by unit fractions)
- Extending division to 2-digit divisors, integrating decimal
fractions into the place value system and developing understanding of
operations with decimals to hundredths
- Developing fluency with whole number and decimal operations
- Developing understanding of volume
By the end of grade 5, students will:
- Fluently multiply and divide multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm
- Add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value
- Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers)
- Multiply a fraction or whole number by a fraction
- Divide unit fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit
fractions (division of a fraction by a fraction NOT a requirement at
this grade)
